Indradyumna Swami - Shankaracharya, the Five-year-old Sannyasi!

H.H. Indradyumna Swami

"In this Age of Kali, it is so difficult to become detached from family life and become renounced. Not everyone can be like Adi Shankaracharya. He was adamant on taking sannyasa at the age of five! His mother said 'Even if your life depended on it, I won't let you take sannyasa!' So Shankar went into the river and put his head in between the jaws of a crocodile - 'Mum, now can I take sannyasa?!' Afraid that her son was dying, she said 'OK, OK, you can take sannyasa!' But this is the rare example - of course we give all respects to Shankaracharya although we don't ascribe to his philosophy - he was a liberated soul who had come for a specific mission."

Paraphrased from a Shrimad-Bhagavatam class at ISKCON Radha-Krishna Temple, Soho St, London on 24th February 2006.

H.H. Indradyumna Swami, disciple of Shrila Prabhupada, is a sannyasi and travelling preacher, heading up the annual ISKCON Polish Festival Tour attended by over 100,000 people.
